What is UAN number – Simple steps to login UAN Portal and Check PF balance

Earlier, there was a problem for employees that whenever they changed job, PF number changed. Also, with multiple PF numbers, it was difficult to understand the account balance and manage them. To help the employees, UAN number was introduced. Now, the question is, what is UAN number? This is a unique number allocated to employees wherein they can handle all their PF numbers. We will explain it in more detail below.

What is UAN number

The term “UAN” stands for Unique Account Number. It is allocated by the Employee Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) to every employee who is a member of the EPFO. This was introduced to eradicate the handling of multiple Provident Fund (PF) Accounts held by a single employee with different employers. This is a 12-digit Unique Account Number that is allocated to the employee for having the details of all PF Accounts with various organisations in one place.

The UAN portal is the web facility introduced by the EPFO for facilitating the employees to have access to their UAN Account. They can fetch details of all the PF Accounts opened by them with different organisations during the employment at one place. The manner for using the aforesaid portal has been discussed in this article.

How to use the UAN Portal?

Once you understand what is UAN number, it is important to understand the UAN portal. The UAN portal of EPFO may be used by the employees who are members of the EPFO in the following manner:

A. Registration on UAN Portal:

You can register on the UAN portal in the following manner:

Step – 1: Visit the website of the EPFO e-Sewa portal by clicking here and click on the “Activate UAN” option under the Important Link Tab as shown in the image below:

Step – 2: Now, enter the required details in the respective fields as shown in the image below and click on the “Get Authentication Pin” and a Pin will be sent to the registered mobile number:

Step – 3: Now, enter the Pin so received in the respective field and a computerized Password will be sent via SMS.

Step – 4: Then, change the Password after the first Login.

Your UAN Account will be activated. We have already explained above what is UAN number for your reference.

B. What is UAN Number Passbook?

Following steps may be followed for accessing the UAN Passbook. It must be noted that passbook will be available only after hours of registration on the EPFO portal. Also, it shall not be available to the Exempted Establishments Members / Settled Members / In-Operative Members:

Step – 1: Visit the website of the EPFO by clicking here and click on the “Our Services” tab and choose “For Employees” option as shown in the image below:

Step – 2: Now, select the “Member Passbook” option under the “Services” heading as per the image below:

Step – 3: Then, log in to your account and once logged in you can have access to various services such as View Balance, User Profile, UAN Card, and Service, etc.

C.  Know your UAN number :

Once know what is UAN number, it is important to know your UAN number. Following are the steps to be followed for knowing the status of the UAN:

Step – 1: Visit the website of the EPFO e-Sewa portal by clicking here and click on the “Know Your UAN” option under the Important Link Tab as shown in the image below:

Step – 2: Enter the registered mobile number and captcha in the respective fields and click on the “Request OTP” button.

Step – 3: Now, enter the OTP so received via SMS and click on the “Validate” button.
You will receive the status of your UAN over the SMS and UAN will be reflected on the screen.

D. Download e-Passbook:

To download e-Passbook, the user must be registered on the UAN Portal. If you are not a registered user, you can follow the procedure specified above. For downloading e-Passbook you have to visit the UAN Portal by clicking here and log in to your account. The e-passbook can be downloaded after 3 business days of registering on the portal.

E. Online Services:

EPF Claims: The EPFO has introduced a new composite claim form to facilitate the full or the Partial withdrawal of PF amount. To avail, this service Aadhaar and Bank details have to be linked with UAN. To initiate the claim process you should be aware of what is UAN number and also know your UAN number.

Amount Transfers: The amount in the previous PF account can be transferred in the current PF account subject to the following conditions:

• The KYC details of the User are updated on the UAN Portal, and
• Previous and Current PF Account details including IFSC are seeded with the UAN database.

Tracking Status of EPF Claims: The status of EPF Claims can be tracked online through logging in on the UAN portal.

Death Claim Filings: Death claims can also be filed online by the beneficiaries of the deceased through UAN Portal.
