I had always wanted to start my own company and food was one of the things I was really passionate about. But what, when and how were the three pertinent questions I was unable to answer.
As a part of my management consulting job, I got an opportunity to visit the famous Amma Canteens in Chennai. For those who don’t know, it’s a chain of subsidized food canteens in Tamil Nadu, where one can get a healthy and fulfilling meal for merely Rs.5. The best part about the canteens is the shared happiness on the faces of people who can fill their stomach without burning a hole in their pockets.
Just one visit was enough for me to clear the what, when and how of launching my own company. After coming back, I resigned from my job, built a sustainable business model and registered my company.
Today, with a dedicated 10 member team, we are building India’s largest chain of women run home cooked food canteens at Sevan Foods. Our first store will go on floors in January 2021 and with each canteen, we plan to provide authentic Indian dishes (which got lost in the sea of cheap fast food) and at the same time, generate employment for at least 5 house based women.
